YÖS (Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı) is the entrance exam organized by Turkey's public universities for foreign students. It mainly consists of iq (aptitude) questions and tests knowledge of mathematics. Students with a high YÖS score can be admitted to prestigious public universities in Istanbul, Ankara with a full or partial scholarship.

Admission by certificate is a type of admission that does not require the YÖS exam, based only on the average score (middle-score) of the secondary school certificate. This route is offered by the vast majority of private universities and is the fastest and simplest admission method. Admission by certificate requires no additional exam — preparing the documents and applying is enough.

Which is more worthwhile depends on your situation. If you have time and know mathematics well, taking YÖS and studying at a public university with a scholarship is more worthwhile in the long term. The main documents required for the visa are: admission letter (original), passport (valid for at least 6 months), visa application form, biometric photos, proof of funds (bank statement) and insurance. Proof of funds is particularly important — you must show that you or your sponsor parents can cover the tuition and living costs.

After entering Turkey, within 30 days you must register at the local police department (Emniyet Müdürlüğü) and obtain an İkamet Tezkeresi (residence permit). In Turkish universities instruction can be delivered in two languages — Turkish and English. Many universities offer both options, and you can enroll in the program of your choice. Each has its own advantages and nuances.

Turkish programs are more widespread and usually have a lower tuition fee. If you don't know Turkish, you take a one-year preparation course (TÖMER) — during this time you learn the language and then move on to the main specialty. For Azerbaijanis, learning Turkish is very easy, and most students start speaking fluently within one or two months.

English programs are designed for international students and usually have a slightly higher tuition fee. For those who know English well, this gives the opportunity to start the specialty directly without spending time learning an additional language. For admission to English programs, IELTS 5.5-6.0 or an equivalent certificate is usually required. For those targeting an international career, English programs are a more strategic choice.

Because Turkish university diplomas are accredited by YÖK (Yükseköğretim Kurulu), they are recognized both in Azerbaijan and internationally. In Azerbaijan, recognition of a diploma is carried out through the equivalencing process of the Ministry of Education, and in most cases no problems arise.

For the recognition procedure, the original diploma, transcript and their notarized translation are submitted to the Ministry of Education. The procedure usually takes 1-3 months.
